Winelands Tour

Cape wines are world renown for their quality and value for money. The charming old estates are situated in stunning countryside, and we visit the premier wine routes of Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. The Winelands region features almost 100 different estates, of which we will visit three today. Also learn the historic initiatives by estate owners who have included employees in the ownership and management schemes.

Start with a master cheese-and-wine tasting at Fairview estate in Paarl. On leaving Fairview, drive to the Groot Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela was released in February 1990. You will have the opportunity to take photographs at this historical site. Then head to the hills and visit Franschhoek with its spectacular views. At Haute Cabriere you will enjoy a fine wine and cellar tour and be awed by the sabrage display, a 19th-century French ceremonial technique of removing the top of a wine bottle with a sword. If you prefer to skip the wine estate then opt for a visit to a local perfumerie and the Huguenot memorial and museum where we learn the history of the French Huguenots, who in 1688 arrived here to pioneer the wine industry. Enjoy a light lunch at one of the many cafes in the Franschhoek area or at your next stop, in the bustling college town of Stellenbosch. Enjoy a walk through the town before heading off for chocolate-and-wine pairing at Blaauwklippen Estate.
