Township Experience

On this in-depth, thought-provoking walk/drive tour, you will discover how the Apartheid policies of the previous white regime destroyed homes and displaced people.

Departing from your city hotel, we proceed to the Bo-Kaap, also known as the Malay Quarters, a national heritage site, with its colourful, Cape Georgian-style homes of the largely “Malay community”, most of whom are descendants of freed slaves. Enjoy a short stop for taking memorable photographs. A short drive further brings us to District Six once a flourishing mixed-race community where 60 000 people lived and worked but was demolished to be reserved exclusively for whites. We drive through what is left of the District Six area and witness the reconstruction and destruction in the area. Spend 45mins in the iconic District Six museum where the history of the people is told through photographs and stories.

The journey continues to Langa, the oldest Black African Township in Cape Town. Along the way we elaborate on the restrictive legislation introduced by the Apartheid regime to enforce racial segregation. On arrival in Langa, a local tour guide will take you through the community centre, Guga s’thebe, to see the exhibits of pottery, sandpainting, and wall murals.  Feel free to purchase from any of the crafters. For those who would like to try their hand at African drumming, we can arrange a 15-minute session on the Djembe drums for just a small donation. Continue with a 45-minute walk through the area –discuss the Pass Laws and the barracks built for African migrant workers, before heading back into the city.
